Windows 11 Performance and Freezing

Fix a slow, freezing or laggy Windows 11 PC.

Start with the symptom you can actually see: slow startup, random freezes, high CPU or memory use, a disk stuck at 100%, gaming stutter, excess heat, or a battery that drains much faster than expected. These guides help you identify the real bottleneck before changing services, drivers or hardware.

Measure the slowdown before trying fixes

“Windows is slow” can describe several different failures. A PC that takes five minutes to start is not the same as one that becomes unresponsive after opening a game, reaches 100% disk usage while idle, or loses speed only after it gets hot. Begin by noting when the problem appears, how long it lasts and whether it started after an update, driver, app or hardware change.

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and watch the CPU, Memory and Disk columns for a few minutes. Short spikes during startup, updates or security scans can be normal. Sustained high use, repeated freezing, abnormal fan noise, drive warnings or worsening performance needs closer investigation. Do not end unfamiliar system processes only because they appear near the top of the list.

Safe performance troubleshooting order

Save open work and restart first. Then check the busiest process, free storage space, startup apps, Windows Update, malware protection, power mode and recent software changes. Test one meaningful change at a time so you can tell what actually helped. Random “optimizer,” registry-cleaner and driver-updater apps often add background load or create new instability.

Back up important files before storage diagnostics, firmware changes or hardware work. If the PC reports drive errors, shuts down from heat, produces burning smells, has a swollen battery, or freezes even in Windows recovery, stop treating it as a normal software slowdown and arrange proper hardware inspection.
