Compress images while checking the visual trade-off
Image compression reduces the amount of data needed to store an image. It can make uploads faster, help a page load more quickly and bring a photo under an attachment limit. The best setting is not always the smallest possible file; it is the smallest file that still looks good for its intended use.
When compression is useful
Compress large camera photos before emailing them, adding them to a website, attaching them to forms or storing many similar images. For screenshots containing small text or interface details, use a higher quality setting because aggressive compression can make edges and letters look fuzzy.
Compare original and compressed results
Use the original-size, compressed-size and savings indicators together with the preview. A large percentage reduction is valuable only if important details remain acceptable. Zoom into faces, text, gradients and high-contrast edges before downloading.
Compression is different from resizing
Compression changes how efficiently image data is stored. Resizing changes the pixel dimensions. If a 4000-pixel-wide photo will only be displayed at 1200 pixels, resizing it first can often reduce the file much more than compression alone.
Keep an original copy
Lossy compression discards some image information. Keep the untouched original if the photo may later be edited, printed at a larger size or reused for another purpose. Repeatedly compressing an already compressed image can gradually make artifacts more visible.
Get a smaller image without guessing
Compression works best when you judge both file size and visible quality. Start with a moderate quality setting, download the result, and zoom in on text, faces and sharp edges before using it. If the image is still too large, reduce quality gradually instead of jumping straight to the lowest setting.
When resizing helps more than compression
If a photo is thousands of pixels wide but will only be shown in a small profile, form or webpage slot, reducing its dimensions can save more space than aggressive compression. Resize first, then compress the resized copy.
Format matters
JPEG is usually efficient for photographs, while PNG can remain larger when the image contains many colours. WebP often provides a good balance for web use. Keep an original copy before converting or compressing important images.
Privacy and limitations
The compression happens in your browser. Results depend on the source image and browser support, so an exact target size is not guaranteed. Animated files and specialised image formats may not preserve every feature.
