Screen Flickering in Windows 11

Use Task Manager as a diagnostic split before uninstalling anything. If Task Manager flickers too, the display-driver path becomes more likely; if it stays stable while the desktop flickers, an app can be the cause.

Use Task Manager to split driver vs app flicker

ObservationWhat it suggests
Task Manager flickers with the rest of the screenDisplay driver or display path is more likely.
Task Manager stays stable while other areas flickerAn incompatible app/overlay becomes more likely.
Only the external monitor flickersCable, adapter, dock, port, refresh rate or monitor path deserves priority.

1. Reset the graphics driver once

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows briefly resets the graphics driver. If the flicker stops, verify stability rather than immediately changing more settings.

2. Open Task Manager and watch what flickers

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Microsoft uses this as a key diagnostic split: if Task Manager flickers with everything else, investigate the display driver; if Task Manager does not flicker while the rest of the screen does, investigate incompatible apps.

3. For a likely driver problem, use update history and supported drivers

Check whether the issue began after a graphics-driver or Windows update. Update the graphics driver from Windows Update or the PC/GPU manufacturer. If the problem began immediately after a driver change and rollback is available, rollback is a targeted test.

Avoid installing multiple unofficial driver packages at once. Change one layer, restart, then verify.

4. For external displays, simplify the hardware chain

Connect the monitor directly if possible, bypassing a dock or adapter. Reseat or replace the display cable with a known-good cable and test another port. Then check the display refresh rate in Windows. A single-monitor hardware path should be stable before you troubleshoot multi-monitor software.

5. If Task Manager is stable, isolate apps and overlays

Focus on software that draws over the desktop or hooks graphics: recently installed utilities, screen recorders, display tools or app overlays. Update or temporarily remove the suspected app one at a time and verify before changing the display driver.

Stop when flicker exists before Windows loads

If the display flickers in firmware/BIOS, on the manufacturer logo, or on another operating system, Windows app troubleshooting is unlikely to solve it. Test the display/cable/hardware path and use hardware support.

Verify the repair

  • The display stays stable after restart.
  • The same refresh rate and connection remain stable for several minutes.
  • No new Device Manager warning appears for the display adapter.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Task Manager matter?

It helps separate a likely display-driver problem from an app compatibility problem because Microsoft documents different next steps depending on whether Task Manager flickers too.

Can an HDMI or DisplayPort cable cause flickering?

Yes. Especially when only one external display flickers, a cable, adapter, dock or port can be part of the display path.

Should I uninstall the graphics driver immediately?

No. First use the Task Manager split and update history so you know whether the driver path is actually the likely cause.
