Match the Bluetooth symptom before reinstalling anything
| What you see | Start here |
|---|---|
| Bluetooth toggle or icon is missing | Check whether Windows still detects the Bluetooth adapter and whether the PC actually includes Bluetooth. |
| Bluetooth is on, but a device will not pair | Check pairing mode, distance, battery, discovery and the old pairing record. |
| The device says Connected but audio still uses speakers | Choose the Bluetooth playback device in Sound settings before changing drivers. |
| Bluetooth connects and then drops | Check battery, interference, sleep/resume behaviour, updates and the supported adapter driver. |
Start with the smallest test that separates PC, adapter and accessory
1Confirm the PC still has a usable Bluetooth radio
Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices. If the Bluetooth switch is present, the radio is at least being exposed to Windows. If the switch is missing or greyed out, open Device Manager and look under Bluetooth, Network adapters and Other devices. A missing toggle and a missing adapter are different from a single headset that refuses to pair.
If this is a desktop or a recently changed Wi-Fi card, verify the hardware specification. Some systems need a separate Bluetooth adapter even when Wi-Fi works.
2Power-cycle the right thing
Restart Windows, then turn the Bluetooth accessory off and back on. If the issue began after sleep or hibernation, test again after a full restart. For USB Bluetooth adapters, connect directly to the PC during diagnosis instead of through an unpowered hub.
3Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter
Windows 11 routes Bluetooth diagnostics through the Get Help experience. Let it check the radio and common configuration problems before you remove drivers or services.
If Bluetooth is missing from Settings
When the switch disappears, focus on adapter detection instead of pairing settings.
- In Device Manager, read the adapter's Device status and record any error code.
- Install pending Windows updates and optional driver updates.
- If the PC maker provides a Bluetooth or combined Wi-Fi/Bluetooth package for your exact model, prefer that package over a random driver site.
- If the adapter does not appear at all, check firmware/BIOS wireless settings and any physical wireless switch. A hardware radio that is disabled outside Windows cannot be repaired from the pairing screen.
If Bluetooth is visible but the device will not pair
- Charge the accessory and put it into its real pairing mode. A powered-on device is not always discoverable.
- Move it close to the PC and make sure it is not still connected to a phone or another computer.
- In Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices, remove the stale pairing and add the device again.
- If the device does not appear, set Bluetooth device discovery to Advanced temporarily and test again.
- Test a second known-good Bluetooth accessory. If every accessory fails on this PC, investigate the adapter/driver layer; if only one fails, focus on that accessory.
If it says Connected but there is no sound
Connection alone does not prove Windows is sending audio to the device. Open Settings → System → Sound and choose the Bluetooth headphones or speaker as the output. If it still has no playback endpoint, remove and re-pair the device, then update the supported Bluetooth/audio driver.
Headsets can also switch profiles when the microphone becomes active. Music quality changing during a call can be a Bluetooth profile limitation rather than a broken radio.
If Bluetooth keeps disconnecting
Test close to the PC with the accessory fully charged. Temporarily move noisy USB 3 devices or hubs away from a small USB Bluetooth dongle. If disconnects began after a Windows update, sleep/resume cycle or driver change, compare the current Bluetooth driver with the version offered by the PC or adapter manufacturer.
Verify before calling it fixed
- The Bluetooth toggle remains available after a restart.
- The adapter is present in Device Manager without a warning icon.
- A known-good accessory can pair and reconnect.
- For audio devices, Windows sends sound to the intended Bluetooth output.
- If the original failure happened after sleep, repeat one sleep/wake cycle and retest.
What came from the older ITFixLab archive
The old site had separate deep pages for Bluetooth missing and Bluetooth connected but no sound. This new page keeps the strongest diagnostic split from both while removing duplicated steps and rebuilding the guidance into the current ITFixLab flow.
Frequently asked questions
Why did the Bluetooth toggle disappear?
Windows may no longer be exposing the adapter because of driver, firmware, power-state or hardware issues. Check Device Manager and the exact PC hardware before treating it as a pairing problem.
Why does Bluetooth say Connected but still play through laptop speakers?
Windows can keep the Bluetooth control connection while audio is routed to another output. Select the Bluetooth playback device in Sound settings first.
Can Wi-Fi work when Bluetooth is broken?
Yes. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can share a card but use different radios, drivers and services, and some desktop configurations provide Wi-Fi without Bluetooth.
