Measure without creating misleading results
Pause cloud sync, game downloads, Windows Update and streaming on the local network. Run two tests against the same nearby server, then repeat on another device. Compare download, upload and latency rather than only the largest number.
For Wi-Fi, test close to the router and, if possible, compare Ethernet. For Ethernet, check the Link speed under Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet. A 100 Mbps negotiated link cannot deliver gigabit speed.
1Check per-app data usage
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Data usage.
- Look for unexpected heavy users and pause them from their own apps.
- Do not disable Windows services randomly; scheduled updates and cloud sync are legitimate traffic.
2Test without VPN or proxy
- Disconnect a personal VPN temporarily and rerun the same test.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and confirm that no unwanted manual proxy is active.
- On a managed work device, do not bypass required security routing.
Improve the link instead of applying internet myths
Move closer to Wi-Fi, reduce obstruction and compare the available bands. 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther; 5 GHz or 6 GHz can offer more capacity at shorter range. The best choice depends on the router, walls and local interference.
Restart the router once and update it through the vendor-supported method if you administer it. Avoid changing DNS as a universal speed fix: DNS can affect the initial lookup delay, but it does not increase the bandwidth of an established download.
1Check adapter configuration and driver
- Install the PC or adapter maker’s supported Windows 11 driver.
- If performance collapsed after an update, test Roll Back Driver when available.
- Leave Speed & Duplex on Auto Negotiation unless the network administrator specifies otherwise; forced mismatches can reduce performance.
2Check metered connection intentionally
- Open the connected Wi-Fi or Ethernet properties.
- A metered setting can reduce background activity but does not create extra line speed.
- Use it only when you want Windows and apps to limit data consumption.
Know when Windows is not the bottleneck
If every device slows at the same time, capture several wired speed tests and router status readings before contacting the ISP. If one website or download host is slow while others are normal, the remote service may be limiting throughput.
High CPU, failing storage or active malware scanning can also make downloads appear slow because the PC cannot process or write data quickly. Check Task Manager during the test instead of assuming the adapter is at fault.

Will changing DNS make Windows 11 internet faster?
It may shorten some name lookups if the existing DNS service is slow, but it does not increase the bandwidth of downloads or fix weak Wi-Fi, congestion or a low Ethernet link speed.
Why is my phone fast but my Windows PC slow on the same Wi-Fi?
The PC may use a different band, have weaker antenna placement, run background transfers, route through a VPN or use an unstable adapter driver.
Does Network reset improve internet speed?
Only when corrupted adapter configuration is the cause. It does not improve ISP capacity, router signal, network congestion or the physical capability of the adapter.
