Separate signal trouble from a Windows fault
Move close to the router and test for at least ten minutes. If stability returns, reposition the router, reduce physical obstruction or use the band that provides the best balance of range and speed. A 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection can be faster but generally has less range through walls than 2.4 GHz.
Test another network such as a trusted phone hotspot. Stable hotspot service points toward the original router or mesh system; drops on both networks point back to Windows or the adapter.
1Create a wireless network report
- Open Terminal as administrator and run
netsh wlan show wlanreport. - Open the report path shown by Windows and review recent disconnect reasons, adapter details and session failures.
- The report does not display saved Wi-Fi passwords.
2Rebuild only the affected Wi-Fi profile
- Go to Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.
- Forget the affected network and reconnect.
- If this is an enterprise network, confirm credentials and certificates before removing its profile.
Stop inappropriate power saving
If disconnects appear after idle time or sleep, open Device Manager > Network adapters, open the wireless adapter’s Properties and check for a Power Management tab. Where available, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and test.
That tab is not exposed by every modern driver. Do not install third-party tuning utilities to force the option. Use the laptop manufacturer’s supported power and wireless packages instead.
1Update or roll back the correct driver
- Install Windows updates first, including relevant optional driver updates only when they match the adapter.
- Prefer the PC or adapter manufacturer’s Windows 11 package.
- If drops started immediately after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available rather than stacking another unrelated driver.
2Check WLAN AutoConfig without random service changes
- Press Windows + R, enter
services.mscand locate WLAN AutoConfig. - Its normal startup type is Automatic and it should be running while Wi-Fi is used.
- If an organisation manages the service, contact its administrator instead of overriding policy.
Use resets only after the pattern is understood
Restart the router once and install its vendor-supported firmware if you manage it. Avoid changing channel width, security mode and several bands simultaneously; change one item and retest so you know what fixed the connection.
Network reset is the final Windows-side step. It can help after an upgrade or broken adapter installation, but it also resets every adapter and can disturb VPN or virtual-machine networking.
