Windows 11 Black Screen: Diagnose Before You Reset

A black screen can be a monitor/output problem, a stalled Windows Explorer session, a graphics-driver failure or a deeper startup issue. The fastest safe route is to identify what still responds before changing Windows.

1. Prove the PC is running

Listen for startup sounds or fans and check whether Caps Lock responds. If the computer is running but the display is blank, start with the display path rather than a reset.

For an external display, confirm power and the correct HDMI/DisplayPort/USB-C input. Reconnect both ends of the cable, remove unnecessary docks/adapters and try a known-good cable or display if available.

2. Try the safe display shortcuts

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to ask Windows to reset the graphics driver. A beep or brief blink is normal.

Press Windows + P and cycle display modes if Windows may be sending the desktop to another screen. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete; if the security screen appears, Windows is running and the fault is higher in the display/session stack.

3. If you can see a cursor, restart Windows Explorer

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Restart Windows Explorer. If it is missing, use Run new task and enter explorer.exe.

If the desktop appears, the display itself was working. Check recent shell customisation, startup software and system-file problems rather than replacing hardware.

4. Use Safe Mode when the screen remains blank

Open Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart, then select Safe Mode.

If the display works in Safe Mode, inspect the graphics driver and recent software/update history. Prefer a supported rollback when the timing clearly matches a driver change.

5. Undo only the change that matches the timing

If the black screen began immediately after a Windows or driver update, use Recovery options such as Uninstall Updates or System Restore when appropriate. Avoid applying every recovery option at once.

Once the desktop is available, the existing ITFixLab DISM and SFC tools can help when broader Windows corruption is suspected.

Stop software troubleshooting when the display path looks physical

If a known-good display never shows the manufacturer logo, video cuts out when a cable or lid moves, artefacts appear before Windows starts, or the PC repeatedly loses video under load, investigate hardware instead of repeatedly reinstalling Windows.

Verify the repair

  • The Windows desktop appears after a normal restart.
  • The intended monitor/output remains selected.
  • No graphics warning remains in Device Manager.
  • Sleep/wake and external-display behaviour are stable.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I see a black screen but can move the cursor?

Windows may have signed in while Explorer or the graphics driver failed to load correctly. Restart Explorer first, then inspect drivers, updates and startup software.

What does Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B do?

It asks Windows to reset the graphics driver. A short beep or screen blink can occur.

Can a cable or monitor really cause a Windows black screen?

Yes. Wrong input selection, a loose cable, dock, adapter, port or monitor can leave the PC running while no image reaches the display.
